To be a leader, rebuild your brand image A leadership position comes either through a promotion or through a new job. The elevation to this position is either by virtue of one's abilities or because of superior skills or critical thinking ability. Success in the new position requires a change in the mindset to execute the new responsibilities and focus on the new role requirements. Many people fail to transition into the new role because they do not know what is expected of them and they are not fully aware of the competencies required to lead. If you find yourself in a leadership role and want to fulfil your role successfully, you need to abandon those tasks that you were doing with success earlier and learn new ones. To succeed in your role - know what is expected of you, acquire skills to execute them and learn to delegate your previous job responsibilities. Lack of delegation means more work and ambiguity regarding you role will only aggravate your stress levels. A shift in outlook is required if you want to succeed, you need to leave your previous role and responsibilities and make the leap into your new role. Leadership involves managerial responsibilities like planning, organising, directing and controlling others. More significantly, it also requires having vision, passion and influence over others. Managers can fail as leaders when they cannot shift their responsibilities into the new role. To get into the groove is difficult but you can make the transition easier by analysing your role and responsibilities in the new position and also the expectations others have from you (the organisation, your superiors and subordinates). This will broaden your thinking and help you understand your role in a relatively better way. Getting an insight into the thoughts of leaders across industries by accessing sources on the net and books will help you think strategically and develop your leadership skills by giving you a varied perspective. You can also read about different companies and leaders to get a larger view. Previously as a manager you were responsible for executing plans made by the leadership but as you move into a leadership role, you need to make those strategic plans and ensure their execution. In a way your role has shifted and you will have to delegate to others but you still need to check in the details and ensure the execution because you are finally accountable for the results. If your new position is the result of a promotion, you already have a reputation in the organisation and you already have an image. You need to re-craft this image based on your new role. For this you first need to know about your existing image and the alterations you need to make in it to succeed as a leader. The inputs of colleagues, your managers (both past and present) and others able to provide the right view can give you a clear picture of your image. Analyse the feedback and see how accurate it is and the areas it indicates for improvement. Use the information to your advantage by making the necessary changes. You need courage and humility to seek feedback from others but it will help you in rebuilding your image in tandem with your new role. As a leader you should be able to get things done from others without formal delegation of authority. For this you need to know your team members well so that you can help/guide them in the right areas to do their job. You should make efforts to know each of your team members and be ready to help them in unfamiliar areas and they in turn will reciprocate the favour. Your willingness and enthusiasm to help others including those outside your department will make them willing to help you when you require their services. Succeeding in a leadership role means stretching yourself to learn new skills and at the same time unlearning some of them. You also need to rebuild your brand and be part of a new peer group.
